TUESDAY 15 OCTOBER 2019 – 5.5KM – APIKIA -PITHARA WATERFALL – KATAKALEI – VOURKOTI – FEAST OF FOURTALIA PROVIDED BY THE VOURKOTI ASSOCIATION

A 5.5 km hike with stunning views. From the wooded village of Apikia and Pithara waterfalls through the mountain village of Katakalei to the highest settlement in Andros, Vourkoti, where a “Fourtalia Feast ” lunch will be served followed by a visit to the Agia Irini Monastery
We will travel by bus from Chora to the starting point of our hike in Apikia with its famous springs. The hike starts with a small detour to the Pithara waterfalls. From there we continue through Apikia village and then climb uphill through wooded slopes to the small quaint village of Katakalei, where we take in the stunning views of the valley and the eastern coastline. After a short break in Katakalei, with coffee/tea and a snack served at the Hiker’s Hut, we continue upwards, then down and upwards again to arrive at the mountain village of Vourkoti, the highest in Andros. On our way, we will cross the Achla river, the largest river in Andros, over the old stone bridge.
A lunch of local dishes will be served in Vourkoti at around 14:45
At the end of the hike we reach the old Vourkoti school, where the Village Association will be waiting for us with local cuisine!
At the end of the meal, around 4:45pm, transport is arranged to Agia Irini Monastery for a short tour of the monastery – three 3 exhibition spaces, dedicated to the flora, geology of Andros and Greek musical instruments &of writing materials. Around 5:45pm return to Chora.

Transport to and from Chora from other parts of the island
In the morning you can get to the Chora Nimborio Meeting Point from other parts of the island (Gavrio,Batsi and Korthi) by using the regular local KTEL bus service.
Show your Festival ID for a reduced fare. Purchase your ticket on the bus.
At the end of the day after the return from the hike/meal/tour to Chora, special Festival BUS transport will be available to take you back from Chora to Korthi, Batsi and Gavrio. Don’t forget to book the SPECIAL FESTIVAL BUS on the Registration/Booking Page.
